Buy an İstanbulkart, add credit and plan your transfers
How visitors buy and reload an İstanbulkart, separate card cost from travel credit, and plan connections without assuming anonymous-card transfer discounts.

For an ordinary metro or tram journey, a physical İstanbulkart is a practical starting point. Buy the card and add travel credit separately; do not assume that an anonymous visitor card includes discounted transfers.
The card solves payment, but it does not turn every connection into one fare. Before choosing how much to load, count the separately gated journeys in your day and check the fare displayed for each service.
Buy a transport card, then add travel credit
Metro İstanbul says that passengers can obtain an İstanbulkart and reload it at Biletmatik machines in its stations. Its passenger FAQ also explains that route maps and information boards identify interchanges.
Look for the ordinary İstanbulkart option on the machine. The official card-price table lists ₺165 for İstanbulkart, checked on October 30, 2026. That is the card price, rather than a promise of included journeys. Add the credit needed for your first trips and verify the resulting balance before leaving the machine.
The same price page lists several different products, including İstanbulkart Plus and limited-use tickets. A lower purchase price for another product does not mean it has the same application requirements or visitor convenience. For a short stay, avoid choosing an unfamiliar product solely because its card costs less.
If the machine does not offer the card you need, use BELBİM’s official service-point finder to locate assistance. Check availability and opening hours for the particular point; a service directory is not a guarantee that every location sells every card.
Reload at a machine and confirm the transaction
At a Biletmatik, choose the reload option, place the card where the machine indicates and follow the payment instructions. Check which payment methods that machine actually offers before committing to the transaction. Keep an alternative way to pay available rather than relying on every machine accepting your overseas bank card.
Leave the card in the indicated position until the transaction finishes. Check the balance shown on screen, and keep any receipt if the payment succeeds but the balance appears wrong. BELBİM’s card-use guidance specifically tells customers not to remove the card from the transaction area before completion; it directs card problems to ALO 153.
Machine loading is often the simpler arrival-day choice when you do not already have a working İstanbulkart online account. Do not spend your first station visit trying to complete unfamiliar account or identity checks if a physical reload is available.
A change of vehicle is not necessarily a discounted transfer
There are two different questions: can you reach the other line, and what will its reader charge? An interchange shown on the network map answers the first question. It does not, by itself, establish a discounted fare for your card.
The municipality’s personalization announcement, published in November 2022 for changes taking effect January 1, 2023, restricted transfer benefits, distance-based refunds and holiday free travel to personalized İstanbulkart users. It said unpersonalized cards would remain usable for transport.
For a visitor using an anonymous card, budget for each new paid entry without relying on those benefits. This is a conservative planning choice based on the published rule, rather than a claim that an old announcement provides a complete October 2026 tariff. Ask station staff or ALO 153 about your specific card if a discount or distance refund would materially affect the journey.
For example, if your route requires leaving one paid area and entering another, keep enough credit for that next entry. Follow the signs to the connecting line, check the reader and retain enough balance for the return trip. Do not assume that a transfer within a particular number of minutes will be free.
Check the service, not one citywide fare
Use the operator’s current fare page for the metro or tram journey you are planning. Card purchase prices, individual fares and eligibility for concessions are separate things.
If your day includes an airport connection, a ferry or a distance-priced service, check that operator’s fare and payment instructions separately. A guide to ordinary metro payment should not be used to calculate an entire airport-to-hotel trip.
Load enough for the journeys you can identify, then top up as needed. Keeping a modest balance also limits how much money is tied up in a card you may not use after the visit. If something goes wrong, note the station, machine or reader and approximate time, keep the receipt, and ask staff for help before paying repeatedly.
